What is a Unix timestamp?

A Unix timestamp (also called epoch time) is the number of seconds (or milliseconds) elapsed since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970 — the 'Unix epoch'. It's the standard way to represent moments in time in programming, databases, and APIs because it's timezone-independent and fits in a single integer.

How do I tell if a timestamp is in seconds or milliseconds?

A 10-digit number (e.g. 1744214400) is almost certainly Unix seconds, representing a date between 2001 and ~2286. A 13-digit number (e.g. 1744214400000) is milliseconds. This tool auto-detects which format you've pasted based on the number of digits.
